CASINO SUE IN COURT
This Wednesday, March 3, 2021, representatives of the indigenous peoples of the Brazilian and Colombian Amazon, as well as French and American non-governmental organizations (NGOs), are taking the Casino group to court in Saint-Etienne, France, for its sales of beef products in South America, linked to deforestation and land grabbing by indigenous peoples based on evidence gathered by the Center for Climate Crime Analysis, the Casino group is alleged to have regularly purchased beef from three slaughterhouses that source cattle from 592 suppliers responsible for at least 50,000 hectares of deforestation between 2008 and 2020. This is an area equivalent to five times the size of Paris.
This is the first time a hypermarket chain has been sued for deforestation and human rights violations in its supply chain, based on the duty of care law passed in March 2017.
